Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Walk to Cure Diabetes

More than 3,800 walkers representing local corporations, families, schools, and other organizations participated in the Central Jersey Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) annual Walk to Cure Diabetes this past October.

The chapter reached their goal of raising more than $1 million for research to find a cure for diabetes and its complications. Thank you to all the walkers (family teams, corporate teams, school and individuals) team captains, sponsors, in-kind donors and volunteers. We could not have done it without you!

The chapter would also like to recognize three very important individuals whose dedication and continued support with the walks is to be commended. Our corporate chairs led their corporate walk teams down a winning and successful path, collectively raising more than $80,000 for this year’s walk program! Michelle Castellana - Essex/Union County Corporate Chair, HR Director, Stop & Shop has been the team captain of Anthony and Nicole’s Angels at Stop & Shop for many years. Jim Tignanelli - Monmouth County Corporate Chair, President, High Point Auto Insurance has spearheaded the company’s walk team as corporate chair for the past two years. Ross Gertner and his family have been involved with JDRF since his son was diagnosed in 1997. This year he merged his family walk team into a new corporate team, Gertner Mandel & Peslak, LLC.

JDRF was founded in 1970 by the parents of children with type-1 diabetes - a disease that strikes children, adolescents, and adults suddenly, makes them insulin dependent for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications. Since inception, JDRF has provided more than $1.16 billion to diabetes research worldwide. More than 85 percent of JDRF's expenditures directly support research and research-related education. JDRF's mission is constant: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.
