Behind the Book 3rd Annual Benefit

BEHIND THE BOOK CHILDREN'S LITERARY NON-PROFIT RAISES NEEDED MONEY AND AWARENESS AT THIRD ANNUAL BENEFIT

Behind the Book, a NYC school-based literacy non-profit focused on exciting children and young adults about reading, today announced that its Third Annual Benefit, held on October 28 at the William Bennett Gallery in Soho, was the most successful in the organization's history. This year's event raised 40% more than last year.

"We are so happy to have such a great turnout, and so grateful to all our stakeholders and supporters, from the talented authors who graciously give us their time and commitment, to the dedicated teachers who believe in taking learning outside-the-box, to the passionate volunteers who are the heart and soul of our organization, to the visionary individuals and foundations that support us - we couldn't do it without them. With necessary funding for non-profits becoming increasingly harder to come by, it's gratifying to see the outpouring of love and support for Behind The Book," stated Jo Umans, Executive Director.

Three prominent authors who actively participate in this unique program - Colum McCann (Let the Great World Spin), Martha Southgate (Third Girl From the Left) and Hannah Tinti (Animal Crackers) - co-chaired the event, and all spoke about their love for Behind the Book as they helped drum up financial support for the evening's silent and live auctions. Items up for bid ranged from exotic vacations to concert tickets for Bruce Springsteen's sold-out show at Madison Square Garden.

Participating authors, teachers, Behind the Book staff, and volunteers have worked diligently over the past seven years to bring various literary works into another dimension in the classroom, often to children that are not active readers. Behind the Book sponsors author visits in nine schools across the city - including Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and the Bronx.

Behind the Book's staff goes beyond just donating books to schools. They work hand-in-hand with teachers to integrate author and illustrator visits into the curriculum. The value of Behind the Book's programs is most evident in the faces of animated, proud students as they meet a book's author and share their own words and ideas. It is the moments of excitement and happiness as well as the books read, projects finished, and the knowledge and confidence gained that demonstrate Behind the Book's success.
