2011 Rickel Teaching Scholarship Awards
11/04/2011 - By www.Anniewatt.com

On November 4, 2011 an awards meeting was held at the Foundation's offices at 75 Rockefeller Center and was highlighted by an address by David S. Rose, noted New York philanthropist and real estate scion.

Twenty students in New York City received 2011 Rickel Teaching Scholarships. The two-year-old scholarship, sponsored by the Annette Rickel Foundation, varies in amount but it is intended to be enough to allow students to live without working outside of school. Non-white community college students in the city who plan to become math and science teachers in the public school system are eligible for the scholarships. The foundation hopes to provide public school students with more minority role models in math and science.
This year's scholarship recipients are: Souad Jarar, Peter Barnes, Vanessa Barrientes Jeewani Boteju, Mary Bullen, Hadija Cameron, Peter Carmichael, Fan Fan Chen, Jennifer Douglas, Kristian Flores, Fatima Flores, Joel Heitman, Brian Hutzler, Sungwon Lee, Jeremy Mezarina, Safaa Mohamed, Yasmin Obriwala, Andrew Peterson, Nneka Wallace, Samuel Weiss and Jason Zhong, Michelle Clausell, Brian Hutzler.
Annette Rickel said she had two reasons for starting the foundation and scholarship. One, community college students needed more attention and support; and two, the city schools have a vast shortage of math and science teachers. “The students are dealing with other circumstances and trying to find their way into a four-year college,” Rickel, a psychotherapist in private practice and faculty member at Weill Cornell Medical College, said in an interview before a ceremony honoring the winners.
The Annette Urso Rickel Foundation provides opportunities for individuals to realize their potential as Math and Science teachers and enhances the quality of primary and secondary teachers by supporting their education through an annual scholarships awards program. The United States is facing a critical shortage of math and science teachers. The economic future of the U.S. depends on having citizens highly trained in math and science and the technology that is based on these subjects.
