2010 Susan G. Komen Orange County Race for the Cure

More than 30,000 people turned out today for the 19th annual Susan G. Komen Orange County Race for the Cure® in Newport Beach.

Breast cancer survivors, clad in pink T-shirts and hats, raced beside family, friends and advocates honoring loved ones touched by breast cancer in an effort to create a world without the disease.

In a rare California appearance, Susan G. Komen for the Cure CEO and founder, Ambassador Nancy Brinker attended the Orange County event this year and shared the story of her personal promise to her dying sister, Susan Komen, that launched the global movement to end breast cancer forever.

The Race had 24,364 registered participants. Of those, 1,712 were breast cancer survivors and the rest enthusiastic supporters, many of whom were racing for a loved one affected by breast cancer. More than 74 percent of participants today were female. There were 837 teams, the largest being United States Postal Service, with a team of 1,030. Additionally, an incredible 1,400 volunteers helped at booths, water stations and on the course to ensure all parts of the Race went smoothly.
